The Grim Present

Humans are naturally one of the weakest lifeforms on Earth. We heavily rely on societal evolution that has pivoted on the discovery and advancement of energy sources.

Energy Paradigm

The current energy utilization model based on fossil fuel is severely impacting human evolution, transforming the Earth at a fundamental level, becoming increasingly unsustainable for life forms.

  • Ever-Increasing CO2: 2023 is the warmest year with 1.45°C higher than pre-industrial levels, breaking the Paris Agreement requirements. 3M people are displaced due to land submersion.

  • Fossil Fuel Pollution: It causes approximately 3.6 million premature deaths, $2.9 trillion or 3.3% of the global GDP healthcare costs and lost labor productivity annually.

  • Energy Crisis: Fossil fuel is projected to deplete within decades. Since the 1960s, the world's oil discoveries have been declining steadily, while global oil consumption continues to rise.

  • Bio-diversity Loss: Oil extraction in the Niger Delta has devastated mangrove forests, wetlands, and aquatic ecosystems, and endangered sea turtles, dolphins, and various fish species.

According to projections by WMO, a dying world with energy crisis awaits us if we don't find a more sustainable way to generate energy.

Social Paradigm

Traditional energy production and distribution are overcentralized, controlled by monopolistic and oligopolistic groups. Overcentralized power poses potential exploitation, instability and risks, significantly suppressing human development and equity.

  • Social Exclusion: Ordinary citizens are sidelined from energy projects. In rural India, centralized power grids fail to reach millions, perpetuating energy poverty and inequality.

  • Energy Vulnerability and Instability: Russia's control over natural gas pipelines supplying Europe through Ukraine has led to several disputes over pricing and supply interruptions.

  • Socioeconomic Exploitation and Disempowerment: Big companies in Kazakhstan exclude local communities from decision-making and investment of energy facilities, resulting in social unrest.

  • Innovation Suppression and Resource Waste: ExxonMobil refused to invest in renewables to preserve its benefit in the traditional energy sector and hindered sustainable progress.

Faced with geopolitical tensions and the potential AI crisis competing for energy, the social paradigm based on fossil fuel cannot facilitate human development to navigate internal or external crises.
